U.S. News publishes Best Countries 2026: Switzerland leads and Europe takes 18 of the top 25

U.S. News & World Report published its Best Countries 2026 rankings on 14 May 2026, marking the tenth edition and introducing an entirely new methodology based on hard data rather than the perception surveys used in previous years. Switzerland took first place globally in the Best Countries 2026 rankings on the strength of consistently high performance across economic, institutional and social measures.

A new method: from perception to data

This year’s rankings assess 100 countries across 100 national indicators, grouped into 24 sub-categories and eight main categories: Governance, Culture & Tourism, Economic Development, Health, Infrastructure, Natural Environment, Opportunity and Civic Health.

According to the release issued by U.S. News on 14 May 2026, Governance carries the highest weighting, reflecting the importance of institutional quality in shaping national success. Eric Litke, who heads Government Rankings at U.S. News, said the new method captures how effectively countries deliver opportunity and quality of life to their citizens.

According to CIC News, the report draws its data from more than 30 international bodies, including the United Nations, the OECD, the International Labour Organization and the World Bank. The overall score is the geometric mean of the eight categories — meaning a country must perform well across every measure to reach the top.

The global top 10: Europe dominates

European countries dominate this year’s overall table outright:

6. Norway
7. United Kingdom
8. Finland
9. Luxembourg
10. Austria

Europe accounts for 18 of the top 25 places. Switzerland ranks first in both Economic Development and Governance, second in Opportunity and Culture & Tourism, and fourth in Health. Denmark takes second place globally on the back of first in Civic Health, second in Infrastructure and third in Health.

Where the United States and Canada stand

The United States ranks 18th globally, reflecting the gap between economic strength and quality-of-life measures. It places first in Culture & Tourism and second in Economic Development, but falls to 33rd in Health, 39th in Infrastructure and 41st in Civic Health. In Natural Environment alone, the United States ranks 72nd.

Canadaranks 19th, one place behind the United States. According to CIC News, citing U.S. News data, Canada performs best in Culture & Tourism (8th globally), with strong showings in Governance and Infrastructure. Canada’s fall out of the top five largely reflects the change in methodology rather than any real decline — in earlier editions Canada regularly featured in the top five under perception-survey scoring.

Category leaders

The rankings show that no country leads across the board. Switzerland is first in Economic Development and Governance. Iceland leads both Health and Opportunity. The United States holds first place in Culture & Tourism. Singapore is first in Infrastructure, followed by Denmark and Luxembourg. Denmark leads Civic Health. In Natural Environment, less industrialised economies come out on top — Cambodia first, followed by the Seychelles, Slovenia, Croatia and Latvia.

Trade-offs between development measures

The report highlights several stark contrasts in the data. Singapore ranks first in Infrastructure but falls to 96th in Natural Environment. Oman is second for Public Safety but 99th in Human Rights & Freedoms. Italy is sixth in Culture & Tourism but only 41st in Opportunity. Cambodia is first in Natural Environment but 97th in Economic Development.

At the bottom of the table, Nigeria ranks 98th, Ethiopia 99th and Angola 100th.
