Overview of category-based Express Entry results

Category-based Express Entry draws have been introduced to invite candidates in six occupational categories to apply for permanent residence.

Category-based Express Entry draws complement the other types ofExpress Entrydraw thatImmigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)will continue to hold.

The other types of Express Entry draw includeInvitation to Apply (ITA)for permanent residence based on meeting a minimumComprehensive Ranking System (CRS)score among all Express Entry candidates, as well as draws inviting candidates on the basis of eligibility for a specific programme (the Provincial Nominee Programme, for example).

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has published a list of six occupational categories, set out in detail below:

• Workers employed in the following occupational groups:
  • Healthcare
  • Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)
  • Trades, such as carpenters, plumbers and contractors
  • Transport
  • Agriculture and agri-food
• Strong French language proficiency.

To be eligible for an invitation through a category-based Express Entry draw, candidates must meet all the requirements set out by IRCC for that draw. When IRCC holds these draws, it ranks the candidates in the pool who meet the category requirements and then invites the highest-ranked candidates to apply for permanent residence.

The process for category-based Express Entry

1. Express an interest: the candidate creates an Express Entry profile online in theirImmigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) account.
2. Entry into the Express Entry pool: if the candidate is eligible for one of the immigration programmes under the Express Entry system:
   • The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
   • The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
   • The Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
3. Check the Comprehensive Ranking System score: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) assigns a score to the candidate’s Express Entry profile in the pool under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Candidates can view their score in their IRCC account.
4. Identify candidates eligible for the category: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) identifies the candidates in the pool who, on the basis of their profile, meet the criteria for a specific category established by the Minister.
5. Rank the Express Entry profiles: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) ranks the eligible candidates according to their CRS scores.
6. Hold the draw and issue invitations to apply: in every type of draw, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) invites the candidates with the highest CRS scores to apply. In category-based draws, candidates must also be eligible for the specific category in order to be invited.
7. Apply for permanent residence: candidates who receive an invitation to apply have 60 days to submit an application for permanent residence under a specific Express Entry programme.
8. Decision on the application: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) makes its decision based on eligibility for the programme, the accuracy of the information in the candidate’s application, and whether they are admissible to Canada.
