Changing or extending a study permit

While studying in Canada, you may need to change or extend your study permit. Maintaining lawful status in Canada throughout this process is essential.

Maintaining status in Canada

It is important not to exceed the period of stay authorised in Canada without first applying to change your status.

You should also comply at all times with any conditions imposed, such as restrictions on the nature of the work, the maximum number of hours you may work per week, and the period during which you may study.

Be sure to review your study permit carefully and familiarise yourself with any conditions it contains.

If you do not apply to extend your current status or to change status before your current status expires, you will need to leave Canada before applying to return.

If you apply to extend or change your status before your current status expires, you are considered to be on “maintained status” as a temporary resident until a decision is made on your application.

You must keep a copy of the documents showing that an extension of status was requested (proof of postage or courier delivery, an online submission receipt, and so on). In addition, if your status expires before a decision is made, you may only continue studying provided you remain in Canada.

This provision applies only to temporary residence applications. If you are applying for permanent residence, you will not be permitted to remain in Canada pending a decision unless you hold valid temporary status as a visitor, student or worker.

If you lose your status in Canada through failure to comply with the conditions of your study permit, you may apply to restore your status within 90 days of losing it.

Extending a study permit

If your study permit expires before you complete your programme of study, you will need to apply to extend it. You should apply for a new study permit before the old one expires, and it is generally a good idea to apply at least 30 days before your current permit runs out. You can apply online or by post.

Once the extension of your study permit is approved, you can apply for aTemporary Resident Visa (TRV), if required

If you are studying in Quebec, you may also need to obtain a newQuebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ). As a general rule, if you need a study permit, you also need a CAQ.

Changing institution

IRCC provides that students do not need to obtain a new study permit in order to move between institutions, programmes of study or levels of study. A student may study in Canada for as long as their study permit remains valid.
