Due Diligence

Updated 5 June 2026

« Back to Glossary Index

Due Diligence is the background verification process that regulatory authorities perform on every applicant in a citizenship or residency by investment programme to ensure they do not pose a risk to the host country.

This process checks multiple layers of information: criminal records, source of funds, financial history, political connections, and presence on international sanctions lists. Some countries hire independent third-party due diligence firms to increase objectivity.

The more rigorous the due diligence, the higher the passport's reputation, as visa-free countries trust the quality of the programme's screening. This is why many Caribbean programmes have continuously tightened their due diligence standards in recent years.

Applicants who do not pass the due diligence stage will be rejected, even if they have sufficient financial capacity. Therefore, preparing a transparent profile from the outset is the key factor in determining the outcome.
