RBI

« Back to Glossary Index

RBI (Residency by Investment) is a form of investment for residency, in which foreign investors are granted residence rights in a country in exchange for a qualifying investment according to regulations.

Unlike CBI which grants citizenship directly, RBI first grants residence status. After a period of living there and meeting the conditions, participants can upgrade to permanent residency and then move towards naturalisation if they wish.

Common investment channels for RBI programmes include: purchasing real estate, investing in businesses, buying government bonds, or depositing money in local banks. Many European RBI programmes are known as Golden Visa.

RBI is suitable for investors who want a backup residency option, access to quality education and healthcare, or freedom of movement within a bloc such as the Schengen Area, without needing citizenship immediately.
