ILR

« Back to Glossary Index

ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) is the status of indefinite settlement in the United Kingdom, allowing a person to live, work, and study without being restricted by time limits.

ILR is equivalent to the concept of permanent resident in many other countries. ILR holders enjoy most of the rights of a citizen, except for the right to vote at the national level and the holding of a British passport.

To achieve ILR, applicants must typically reside legally in the UK for a certain number of years, pass the Life in the UK test, demonstrate English language proficiency, and maintain a clean criminal record.

After holding ILR for the required period, settlers can apply for naturalisation to become a British citizen and hold a British passport.
