The Consumers Price Index (CPI) is the official measure of inflation in New Zealand, published quarterly by Stats NZ. The CPI tracks the average price change of a fixed basket of consumer goods and services, representing household expenditure.

Unlike HLPIs, which focus on the cost of living for specific groups, the CPI reflects national inflation. CPI data significantly influences the monetary policy of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. In the third quarter of 2025, the CPI rose by 3.0%, higher than the 2.4% average cost of living increase.
